JASPM 31

Greeting

Welcome to the 31st Annual Conference of JASPM.

Since ancient times Osaka has been a gateway between Japan and continental Asia, a place where a rich popular culture has flourished amid intermingling flows of things, people and capital. On the other hand, it has also been at the forefront of urban development led by private corporations during Japan’s modern period. Osaka University’s Toyonaka Campus (formerly Naniwa High School under the old education system), located in the northern suburbs of Osaka, was originally built as a scenic suburban school campus as part of the early 20th century trend of development along private railway lines. We hope that this conference, held in such a location, will provide an opportunity to reconsider Japanese popular music research in terms of cross-border history and geographical interactions.

On December 7 (Saturday), we plan to hold individual presentations and a special session in English in the afternoon, followed by the JASPM general meeting in the evening; on December 8 (Sunday), we will have workshops in the morning and a symposium in the afternoon. For the symposium, we will welcome Hyunjoon Shin (South Korea) and Tung-hung Ho (Taiwan), who have played central roles in the Inter-Asia Popular Music Studies group (IAPMS) since its formation in 2007; and Kevin Fellezs (U.S.A.), who has carried out important work on the relationships between musical practice and African American and Asian American (in particular Japanese American) identities. In this symposium we will position Japanese popular music and its research in relation to inter-Asian and Asian American popular music studies, which have seen a surge of interest in recent years. Last year, at the symposium of the 30th annual meeting, the central founding members of JASPM gave us a retrospective look at our society’s origins and history. This year, with that historical perspective and original spirit in mind, we aim to survey the prospects of the coming era. By chance, the 2021 conference of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music is to be held in Daegu, South Korea. Looking ahead to this IASPM conference, the second one to be held in Asia following the 1997 conference in Kanazawa (Japan), we hope the JASPM conference this year will provide opportunities for the cultivation of international and interdisciplinary research.

For the reception party, we plan to have a performance by Osaka’s renowned chindon’ya, “Chin-don Tsushinsha.” The activities of this group, which are at the intersections of modern and premodern, imported and domestic, art and commerce, adherence to the local and transcendence of borders, express perfectly the aims of this conference. Please come prepared to welcome them with generous tips.

We look forward to a rich and colorful conference in Osaka.

Wajima Yusuke (Osaka University)
